As an entrepreneur, Oliver Winzenried is also socially active. The co-founder and CEO of Wibu-Systems AG in Karlsruhe supports numerous social projects at home and abroad. In an interview with podcast host Sebastian Gerstl, he says: “It’s not enough just to pay taxes.” Because: “I think we’re doing very well here in Germany. Even if we express justified criticism in many places, we still live in a country where everything works very well and social security is very high. It’s not everywhere of the world. So we can also give a part back.”

In addition to environmental projects, Wibu-Systems AG also supports the nph Children’s Aid Latin America, for example in the form of a day-care center in Honduras. “We also support other nph children’s aid projects, such as Christmas gift campaigns,” says Winzenried. “Children are our future. It is very important for a traditional, family-run company like Wibu-Systems that children all over the world have the chance of a good education.”
Social commitment makes companies attractive
But social commitment also puts companies in a good light, reveals Oliver Winzenried when he says: “If it is possible to bring a personal, heartfelt issue of IT security to projects outside of business activity, then that is certainly something feels good and what is also well received by the employees, partners and customers.” From the decision-maker’s point of view, it is also about making the company attractive to skilled workers, because these people are rare and sought-after in the IT sector in particular.
“We are in the situation that we don’t have enough potential employees,” he admits honestly. Young people in particular not only want to earn money, they also want to see meaning in what they do, and a company that is socially and sustainably active helps with this. “The employees are looking for more,” confirms Winzenried. “You need a purpose in your work.” Employees have to identify with the companies, because only then would they get down to work one hundred percent. According to the expert, innovative, promising products also play a role.
Sustainability in the company building
Energy efficiency and sustainability are also increasingly coming into focus. The founder emphasizes that the new building of the company location in Karlsruhe from 2019 was sustainable. Only high-quality materials were used and attention was paid to a good energy balance. “In addition, we now heat with district heating, where the largest part comes from renewable energies, we have plenty of photovoltaics on the roofs and battery storage in the building,” reports Winzenried. In addition, charging stations for e-bikes and electric cars are available, as well as highly developed building technology that helps save energy without reducing comfort. “We also try to use sustainable materials in our products.”
