“Entre eux deux”: Melody Gardot with sensual album | NDR.de – Culture – Music

Rough, grooving songs (“Currency Of Man”) or shimmering string arrangements (“Sunset In The Blue”) – Melody Gardot is always looking for new ways. Her musical tête-à-tête with the pianist and composer Philippe Powell is now appearing: “Entre eux deux”.

The two met in Paris: Melody Gardot and Philippe Powell. For both of them, the French capital is their adopted home and three of the ten tracks on the album are also written and sung in French. And off you go, as a matter of course, buying croissants for a lazy Sunday breakfast in bed – that’s what the song “Fleur de Dimanche” is about.

Cooperation with film music great Francis Lai

Melody Gardot and Philippe Powell composed and wrote almost all the tracks themselves, except for two. One is a chanson penned by French film music great Francis Lai – “Plus fort que nous” – where both sing. The other is a classic by the famous “Papa”: Roberto Baden Powell de Aquino, Baden Powell for short, he was one of the most important Brazilian guitarists. His son Philippe, on the other hand, sits at the piano and sometimes plays a little too well. But when he sings, he resembles his father; sounds similarly quiet and fragile.

Melody Gardot: whisper, breathe, dream

The two voices create an attractive contrast. Melody Gardot unfolds its magic especially in the lower registers. In the high register it has a delicate vibrato, like soft fluttering wings. On her new album she makes extensive use of it, whispers, breathes, dreams and talks about love, about Paris.

These lyrics and melodies sound like almost forgotten classics, but they are completely new. At some point, though, you get drunk on all these delicate ballads. You want a bar and a glass to stare into. The danger of getting lost in this harmony between the two is quite high.

“Ode to Every Man” about the nature of love

Once Melody Gardot lapses into a recitation. The “Ode to Every Man” – the ode for everyone – is a touching text about the nature of love. Accompanied carefully by Philippe Powell on the piano. It is a visually powerful piece rich in metaphors, and the two manage not to slip into the kitschy. “Entre eux Deux” is an album between major and minor, between man and woman, croissant and martini, between evening and morning.

Melody Gardot steps in live Elbjazz-Festival on – on June 3, 2022 on the main stage.
