“Cooks, waiters and hotel employees have been struggling with massive financial losses due to short-time work since spring. Because of the mostly low wages in the hospitality industry and the lack of tips, the last reserves have now been used up. The money is hardly enough for the rent – not to mention Christmas presents, ”says Claus-Peter Wolf, Managing Director of the NGG Black Forest-Hochrhein region.
The NGG therefore calls on the federal government to pay employees in the hospitality industry immediate Corona emergency aid in the amount of 1,000 euros. “Politicians are helping companies with enormous sums of money to prevent a wave of bankruptcies. Now it mustn’t leave the employees out in the rain, ”said Wolf. According to the NGG, the costs for emergency aid to employees in December would amount to around 600 million euros. For comparison: According to the federal government, corporate aid in the hospitality industry will cost the state 17 billion euros this month alone.
In addition, the payment of corporate aid must be linked to the preservation of jobs. “It must not be that innkeepers and hoteliers can now have 75 percent of the previous year’s turnover reimbursed and then put their employees in front of the door a little later,” emphasizes Wolf. The companies are in a historically unique crisis. However, this must be endured together with the employees – not least to keep skilled workers who are urgently needed after the pandemic.
According to the Hans Böckler Foundation, the introduction of a “minimum short-time work allowance” could decisively help to keep income losses in the low-wage sector low. France had successfully introduced such a model linked to the statutory minimum wage. In this country, a “minimum KuG” would have to be 1,200 euros a month, according to the foundation. The NGG union calls on the federal and state governments to examine this proposal in detail in order to avoid distortions at the lower end of the income spectrum.
“It is also clear that politicians must quickly present a timetable for how things will continue in the new year,” demands unionist Wolf. Months could pass before a Covid 19 vaccination is available for the entire population – a time that companies and employees in the domestic hospitality industry do not have without further help.
According to the employment agency, the catering industry in Freiburg employs 6,056 people in 476 companies and a further 1,436 employees in 73 companies in the accommodation industry, 4,590 people in 501 companies in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district and a further 3,937 employees in 250 accommodation companies, and 2,047 people in the Emmendingen district 268 companies and another 580 employees in 37 companies in the accommodation industry, 6,745 people in 805 companies in the Ortenau district and a further 2,367 employees in 170 companies in the accommodation industry, in the district of Lörrach 4,163 people in 524 companies and a further 1,018 employees in 95 companies in the accommodation industry, in the Black Forest Baar district 2,669 people in 340 companies and a further 1,115 employees in 68 companies in the accommodation industry and in the Waldshut district 2,513 people in 341 companies and a further 1,004 employees in 89 companies in the accommodation industry.
