The State Center for Political Education Baden-Württemberg (LpB) looks back on half a century of political education work. On this occasion, it presents a nearly 170-page publication that examines its own offers in the light of the past five decades. “Advertise for Democracy” – under this title, the anniversary volume traces the political change, educational mandate and professional discourse of the past fifty years since the institutional foundation stone was laid on January 25, 1972.
“Political education is the elixir of life for liberal democracy. It makes an important contribution to the establishment and development of our free, democratic constitutional state. ”With these words, the President of the Baden-Württemberg State Parliament, Muhterem Aras MdL, honored the LpB’s mission in her welcoming address. How do political developments influence educational work? How is the social framework reflected in the offers? The volume illustrates the interplay of continuity and change in which the institution has developed over the decades in order to fulfill its mandate in a contemporary way. At the same time, a look back sharpens the awareness of the educational identity of the institution.
Five chapters are devoted to the five decades since the founding year 1972. It is preceded by an essay on the prehistory of the state headquarters and the beginnings of political education in the south-west of Germany after the Nazi dictatorship. The authors include Sibylle Thelen, co-director of the LpB since 2020, and Lothar Frick, who led the state headquarters alone from 2004 to 2020: Sibylle Thelen deals with the upheavals after the fall of the Berlin Wall in her contribution about the 1990s, Lothar Frick takes it position in an essay on the tasks of political education in the present and the future. The birthday ribbon also points to another anniversary: that of the “Haus auf der Alb” conference center in Bad Urach. For thirty years, the regional headquarters have been able to use the listed Bauhaus building as a resonance space for their educational work.
With more than 120 employees, the State Center for Civic Education Baden-Württemberg is one of the major agencies in the pluralistic landscape of civic education in Germany. It is represented at four locations in Baden-Württemberg. In addition to the headquarters in Stuttgart and the “Haus auf der Alb” conference center in Bad Urach, it has branches in Freiburg and Heidelberg. Two further branch offices are being set up in Ludwigsburg and Tübingen. As a result, the regional work of the LpB will in future also be anchored institutionally in all four government districts of the country. The institution also achieves reach with various offers and formats – with face-to-face events, printed publications, extensive information on the Internet and in cooperation with a large network of institutional and civil society partners.
