Nearly 86,000 jobs have been lost in the UK since 2019 in the nightlife sector, one of the hardest hit by the pandemic, the nightlife industries association NTIA announced in a statement on Monday.
According to the association, the sector accounted for 1.6% of the UK’s GDP in 2019, before the pandemic, that is, 36.4 billion pounds (49.6 billion dollars or 42.8 billion euros) with 425,000 jobs nationwide. .
“We fear that many of the jobs lost in the industry as a result of the pandemic will be lost for good, given the number of companies closing and the seemingly lasting weakening in demand,” said Michael Kill, NTIA CEO.
These data on job losses in nightlife come at a time when severe labor shortages are also holding back the recovery in many other sectors, including catering.
Kill called on British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak to use his budget law, due to present on October 27, to “support this battered sector” and called for “an extension of the reduced VAT rate of 12.5% for the bars and restaurants (and hotels) sector until 2024 “.
The nightlife sector has been one of the most affected by the pandemic, due to sanitary restrictions that forced many venues to remain closed for months, especially the clubs.
In Wales, it is mandatory from the beginning of October to show a certificate of vaccination against Covid-19 in order to enter these premises, as in Scotland.
Plans to make it mandatory in England as well have been postponed for the time being and are not on Northern Ireland’s agenda, despite a very high level of contagion.
The UK records some 35,000 new Covid-19 cases every day and more than 100 deaths a day.
