Entering ‘Rio Time’ in global governance… Expectation of ‘Global South’ and ‘China’s answer’

The 2024 G20 Summit will respond to the rapidly changing international situation and complex and serious governance issues under the theme of ‘Building a Fair World and a Sustainable Earth.’

Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out that “members of the 20 major countries, which are major powers in the world and region, must embody the responsibilities of a major country and set an example for the development of each country, the welfare of humanity, and the progress of the world.”

In a survey of netizens around the world released by CGTN, China’s Central Broadcasting Corporation (CMG), respondents agreed with President Xi Jinping’s claims and positively evaluated China’s positive contribution to global economic growth and improvement of global governance.

Various global challenges, such as sluggish economic growth, deepening food and energy crises, continued geopolitical conflicts, and continued expansion of the global governance deficit, urgently require a ‘cure’ from the G20. 80.9% of respondents responded that the G20 is a platform to strengthen multilateral cooperation and share development opportunities, and that all parties should cooperate to respond to uncertainties and challenges in the international community. In addition, the countries most affected by the challenge are the ‘Global South’ countries. 67.1% of respondents said that the G20 summit should pay attention to the development needs of ‘Global South’ countries and enhance the role and influence of ‘Global South’ countries in international affairs. It was expected that it would be improved effectively. 73.4% of respondents expected G20 member countries to actively promote international cooperation on climate governance issues, which are a common concern for ‘Global South’ countries, and promote the green transition of the global economy.

As the largest developing country and an important member of the ‘Global South’, China has strived to further enhance the voice and representation of ‘Global South’ countries in international affairs through the G20, a multilateral cooperation mechanism. China is the first country to explicitly support the African Union’s accession to the G20. China cooperates with more than 150 countries to jointly build the ‘Belt and Road’, promotes cooperation in global development initiatives with more than 100 countries and international organizations such as the United Nations, and always shares development opportunities with global southern countries with an open and inclusive attitude. and has contributed China’s wisdom to global governance.

Netizen @Shining237 commented, “China is setting a new benchmark for the world.”

Among the survey respondents, 92.8% responded that China has greatly contributed to improving the representation and voice of ‘Global South’ countries in global governance, and 91.4% responded that China is the backbone that promotes the development and common prosperity of ‘Global South’ countries. Netizens fully acknowledged China’s contribution, saying, “What China has done for the development of emerging economies in Latin America, especially the southern region of South America, is highly regarded and respectable, and to the extent that China chooses to integrate and engage these countries, we will support them.” “I am responsible,” he said.

This survey was posted on CGTN’s English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Russian platforms, and 7,469 netizens participated in the vote and expressed their opinions in 24 hours.
