Webtoons are electronic comics that quickly became popular in Asia and the United States. Global platforms, like piccoma, are now rolling out across Europe to grow their business and reach new audiences. Nevertheless, creation and production are still limited.
According to general rules, the Creative Europe Webtoon Contest will accept applications between May 15, 2023 and August 31, 2023. It is open to residents over the age of 15, from all EU countries and non-member countries that participate in the Europe program Creative. This finances actions that strengthen cultural diversity in the territories. The candidate must produce a chapter of 20 to 60 boxes, which was not produced before 2020 nor published.
The jury will select the winners between September 1, 2023 and October 15, 2023 and then announce them in November 2023, during the largest comic book festival in Europe: Lucca Comics and Game Festival (Italy).
The selection process
The jury will mark out of 10 each of these criteria: narration, readability, clarity, visual originality. He will also look for the unusual nature of the work in order to choose the 7 finalists who will receive an amount of €1000 each.
The Creative Europe Webtoon competition will finally award a 3rd prize (€6,000), a 2nd (€10,000) and a first place (€15,000). The winner of the readers’ prize will win an additional €2,000 in addition to the amount of his other endowment.
The festivals Komiksowa Warszawa (Warsaw of comics) in Poland and Lucca Comics and Game Festival in Italy will ensure the promotion in southern and eastern Europe. Finally, the Finnish Comics Society and its CUNE Comics project, which brings together all the Nordic countries and allocates artistic residencies, will support the action in northern Europe.
However, the Angoulême Comic Strip City is not the only one behind this type of competition, which is multiplying to meet a certain demand. On the private side, the Webtoon reading platform is thus launching its Webtoon Concours 2023which will open in July…
