Since Wednesday (15th), many OpenAI users have found that if they enter the domain name “AI.com” in the web search bar, they can enter the chat page of ChatGPT. This upgrade makes the process of using ChatGPT easier for users.
At present, the identity of the buyer of the domain is unknown, and OpenAI has not yet announced whether it was bought by the company, so it cannot be ruled out that there are fanatics who have helped OpenAI a lot. However, Jeffrey Gabriel, a domain reseller from Saw.com, claims to have brokered the deal for the “AI.com” domain.
The two-character domain name exists like a holy grail, and AI.com estimates that the transaction amount exceeds 10 million US dollars
Gabriel estimated that the transaction price of such a domain name as “AI.com” should exceed US$10 million, and the public asking price of the domain name before being purchased was US$11 million. Gabriel said that even if AI.com was bought before the AI generation technology became popular, the price should be about the same as it is now due to the current economic situation.
The reason why the transaction amount of AI.com is so high is that the domain name consisting of two English characters is regarded as the existence of the “holy grail” in the domain industry. Its concise features and only 676 combinations make two-character domain names rare. Looking at past cases, even domain names composed of random two letters have a transaction amount of no less than US$100,000. Last year, “IT.com” was acquired for $3.8 million.
Didn’t other technology companies consider buying AI.com during the 15-year window period?
Domain investment firm Future Media Architects held the domain name for 15 years before selling AI.com.
In fact, Amazon (Amazon) was one of the buyers interested in AI.com during this period, but the company probably wanted to use the domain name for the upcoming “Amazon Internet” (referred to as AI) products, rather than artificial intelligence. In the end Amazon gave up on buying the domain.
Gabriel said that it is worth noting that technology companies such as Huida (Nvidia) and Intel (Intel) that have invested in AI have not shown much interest in domain names, because the technology giants have successfully built brand awareness without relying on A special domain name, so you don’t want to spend a lot of money to buy it. On the contrary, small companies that are just starting out need a bright spot that people will remember.
