Former coach Spanish Luis Enrique has admitted that he planned to send home a player who did not meet his expectations World Cup 2022.
Since winning the 2010 World Cup, Spain have seen a dramatic decline in the same event. The Matador squad was affected by the curse of the defending champion team that did not qualify for the group stage.
At the 2018 World Cup, Spain’s steps stopped in the round of 16 after being defeated by Russia. Now, Alvaro Morata cs has been eliminated in the quarterfinals after being defeated by Morocco in a penalty shootout.
Previously, Spain also stumbled in the group stage. They had to settle for being runners-up after being defeated by Japan in their last match.
Spain’s poor performance in Qatar had to be paid for by failing in the quarter-finals. The Spanish Football Federation was forced to take a firm stance by not extending Enrique’s contract.
Enrique admits he made mistakes in his leadership with Spain. Especially choosing a player who actually appeared underwhelming.
“I’ll be honest with you, I’m going to replace a player. I won’t mention his name, but I want to swap him for another player,” Enrique said. Sports bible.
“My personal assessment is that there’s a player I want to replace with another player. Not for bad behavior, but I see it’s not what I expected,” he continued.
The former Barcelona manager denied that one of the players in question was Pablo Sarabia, who played just five minutes as a substitute against Morocco.
“I think Pablo Sarabia deserved more than the five minutes I gave him. This time I would even make him a starter,” said Enrique.
