Enrico Vaime, one of the most important Italian television and radio authors, died on Sunday 28 March at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome. He was 85 years old.
«I joined Rai many years ago, with a public competition. Liliana Cavani, Giuliana Berlinguer, Francesca Sanvitale, Carlo Fuscagni, Giovanni Mariotti, Leardo Castellani entered with me. At that point they understood that it was risky and they didn’t do any more ». Enrico Vaime, considered one of the greatest radio and television authors, died today, Sunday 28 March, at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, at the age of 85. To give the news, through a tweet, was the colleague Fabio Di Iorio: «Enrico Vaime was the most beautiful, cultured and intelligent person in the world. It is gone and we are all so much poorer ».

Vaime was a screenwriter, writer and presenter. He has collaborated in the drafting of numerous successful programs such as “Quelli della Domenica”, “Canzonissima”, “Tante excuse” and “Risatissima”. Paired with Italo Terzoli he was the author of all the hits of Gino Bramieri, from the radio “Batto quattro” to the variety “GB: Show”. He has written fiction and numerous theatrical musicals, especially for the couple Garinei and Giovannini. Conductor since 1980 of the radio program “Black Out”, which he conducted with Fabio Fazio, Simona Marchini and Pierfrancesco Poggi, he has also published many books.

In a 2012 interview he said: «I had teachers extraordinary, who had no intention of becoming masters, but they were, from Marchesi to Flaiano, from Zavattini to Bianciardi: men with whom I worked and to whom I gave my esteem and my attention to the end. I have told a thousand times about them: more or less the same anecdotes always go around. Of course today everything is a bit tired, everything is a bit tattered, yes. I regret the great polemicists, the great satirists, the writers, that is, people who knew how to look at things, grasping the grotesque side and turning the whole soup upside down a bit to arrive at a conclusion considered positive ».

He spoke of the masters but he also spoke of himself, of his writing. The success that gave him great notoriety as an author was «Canzonissima 68» with a formidable trio: Mina, Walter Chiari and Paolo Panelli. «And yet – Vaime recalled – the transmission started with great difficulty. All the authors had escaped, literally melted. And we were called to put up that sideshow which Rai seemed to be unable to do without. But we never got our heads together. Of course we first accepted everything, then we became selective. But as soon as we put on a bit of arrogance, fate would take us back to earth ».

There are countless programs that he signed up to a few years ago: he wrote the texts for the transmission «La giostra», presented by Enrica Bonaccorti, for «… And company beautiful» (which he also conducted with Mara Venier) and for «Yesterday today and … tomorrow?». In 1996 he signed the theatrical comedy «The man who invented television» interpreted by Pippo Baudo. There was a phrase that he loved to repeat and that today, sadly, we can read as his epigraph: «Courage, the best is over! This is a phrase to be used with even excessive ease. It is a classic, flaian as a matrix, and it is also true. The best is over: maybe; we, however, always hope not. Now I look forward to the next steps that my children will take ».
