The most important stages in Enrico Mattei’s life: he retraces them – on the occasion of the anniversary of his death. The documentary by Rai Documentari, in collaboration with Aut Aut Production, “Enrico Mattei. Rebel for love”, broadcast on Friday 27 October at 9.20pm on Rai 3. Through his figure, the story allows us to understand the political and economic role of oil in today’s European and global geopolitical scene, focusing on the challenges that await the Italy and Europe to ensure greater energy security and autonomy, and proposing a historical perspective to better understand the present.
The story is filmed between Milan, Turin, Rome, Matelica and Acqualagna, the latter places where Mattei was born and raised. The various testimonies present in the documentary offer a faithful and complete portrait of the character’s existential arc. In the buildings that were Mattei’s headquarters, such as the Rome headquarters of Eni, important professors of economic history and geopolitical experts delve into the biographical story, while faces better known to the general television audience, such as Giovanni Minoli and Monica Giandotti, offer an original point of view to understand the character,
The film opens and closes with the testimony of magistrate Vincenzo Calia, who conducted the investigations which established, with a 2006 ruling, that Enrico Mattei’s plane fell due to sabotage. Within this narrative frame, the documentary reveals how the existential and professional parable of Enrico Mattei, from his early years at Agip to the leadership of Eni and the tug-of-war with the “seven sisters”, was fueled by his strong relationship with faith and his intense spirituality, above all by a strong feeling of love and devotion for poor people.
Rich in unpublished archive materials, made original by a careful work of coloring the 16 and 35mm film originally in b/w, with the contribution of animated illustrations that bring into private or controversial facts of Mattei’s life, the story also makes use of of some institutional figures who enthusiastically wanted to celebrate it. Among others, the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, who helps to lead the spectator by the hand into the contemporary world. In a difficult moment for the whole world also due to the issue of energy, “Enrico Mattei. Rebel for love” must be considered the state of the art on the human and entrepreneurial story of the greatest exponent of the State Enterprise.
