Press note of the Piedmont general practitioner federation. “The FIMMG of Piedmont interprets the indignation expressed by the entire category of General Practitioners, after the statements of Councilor Icardi who in recent days has transferred the responsibility for the serious inconveniences related to the lack of supply of flu vaccines on the doctors of Family; doctors who will have to manage the consequences of a further inefficiency of the system by having to reorganize the calendars for the safe access of their patients, with further frustration of the doctors and anger of the citizens.
But this is only the latest of the serious structural deficiencies that are making our everyday work unsustainable. General Medicine, the only local service that has never closed or converted its business, guaranteeing assistance at three hundred and sixty degrees despite the serious health crisis, is close to collapse due to the exhausting load of undue tasks, which others should have taken care of . Everyone can see the inefficiency of the SISPs, to which the law assigns all the functions of surveillance, contact tracing, timely management of tampons from booking to verification of results, as well as the necessary provision of quarantine measures, functions performed with delays such as to leave clients waiting for answers that never seem to arrive.
General Practitioners, to give support to their patients abandoned by a system that does not hold up, are doing well beyond their duty, directly requesting tampons, isolating contacts, directly booking tests for the healing of patients who are now asymptomatic who otherwise they would remain abandoned in their endless isolation, certifying a healing and a return to the community that only the SISP, if only it did, could decree.
The result is an immense workload for the management of a completely inefficient system, with an IT platform that in the intentions should have streamlined the work, but which in reality dramatically amplifies it, since it is studded with bugs, slowdowns, updates that instead of improving the usability make it worse, with no automatisms that would simplify every function, platform on which the doctor desperately tries to upload data, modify obsolete personal data, insert symptoms already entered three times, book tampons on diaries already exhausted, check one for one the results of the swabs in the absence of notifications for the negative ones, and then again, again, for the next patient, from morning to evening, from Monday to Sunday.
At the same time, General Medicine is carrying out the most massive anti-flu campaign ever seen before, it is also following thousands of patients at home through the tools of ADI Covid and the USCA. Faced with this reality, there is no longer room for the main task of general medicine, namely to guarantee clinical assistance to an elderly and fragile population, whose chronic and oncological diseases are not miraculously cured in the face of Covid but which require daily listening and care.
We are close to collapse: how long can we still hold up at these rates? We have always been ready to act as Doctors, assuming the clinical role that belongs to us, but the Region must reverse course and the Councilor must demand that our requests be satisfied by the Public Hygiene Services, the CSI and the Laboratories, real obstacles today to an effective management of the emergency that has not yet overflowed from the embankments of the territory only thanks to our vicarious action. The allocations for the personnel and for the small technology already requested during the first wave have not arrived, no concrete traces of the much-heralded enhancement of territorial medicine, indispensable supports such as PPE hardly arrive. In light of this, we not only expect a total and complete revision of the words of Councilor Icardi, but also solidarity for a category left alone in the storm.
