While Chega grows in the polls inside, outside it seeks support. André Ventura stated to Expresso that the party initiated contacts with the North American Republican Party and the Brazilian government months ago. If the links to the first are Chega militants emigrated to the United States, in the second they are evangelicals “close to the Bolsonaro family”.
The weekly explains that Ventura intended to visit both countries this year to establish “formal contacts”, but that the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus forced a change in plans. “If it is possible, we would like to go to the USA in October or November, since I think Brazil is more difficult this year due to the complicated situation” of the pandemic, he says.
A European family for Chega
Expresso reported this Saturday that André Ventura had a video conference meeting about a month ago with the European Parliament’s Identity and Democracy (ID) group, which integrates political forces of nationalist right and extreme right, such as the Italian League of Matteo Salvini.
The European group, takes an interest in working with the Portuguese party, although it does not have any MEPs. The integration in the ID will only be waiting for the formal letter from the group coordinator, made up of 73 deputies from nine countries, which should “arrive soon”.
