Enoch Burke, a teacher at Wilson’s Hospital School, is currently facing legal action from the Church of Ireland (CoI) school which is seeking his dismissal. He was placed on administrative leave last September after he expressed opposition at a school event to addressing a student by their new preferred name and using the pronoun “they”. The subsequent disciplinary process led to the school securing High Court orders restraining him from attending it.
Burke continues to attend the school and has been fined €700 daily since January 27th for contempt of the court order. The High Court also directed him to pay €23,800 by March 23rd, and said the school could apply to enforce payment over his assets if he failed to do so. Burke has not complied with the order and is due to appeal against a notice of dismissal that was served by the school board of management on January 20th. Ahead of the hearing involving the school and Burke, he is seeking to serve subpoenas on three CoI clerics to attend the case.
