If you are one of those people who straps an iPhone on your arm when you go out on a jogging trip, the music service Tidal now offers a solution to the problem. If you have an Apple Watch, you can now stream music directly from your watch.
Tidal for Apple Watch frees you from your mobile
Download the Tidal app directly to your Apple Watch, connect a pair of wireless headphones or earphones and listen to music – completely independent of your mobile phone.
Tidal, which offers both lossless and high-resolution music experience, is losing much of its lead in terms of sound quality, when the giant Spotify and Apple Music offer similar experiences.
But Tidal’s latest feature, which lets you play music directly from Apple Watch – and even download your favorite playlists offline – puts the streaming service back on the map.
Note that you need an Apple Watch Series 3 or later, with watchOS 7.1.
The music on the Apple Watch is limited to 96 kbps – which is far from lossless but still sounds pretty ok. In situations where you want the best possible sound quality, you are still banished to your mobile phone or computer.
Our first impression
The undersigned has tried on his own Apple Watch SE, and the service works as promised. The interface is very minimalist, with no search function. You can browse and play from your favorite songs, albums and playlists, as well as download albums and playlists offline.
The only problem is that it’s a bit slow and that laggar. When you play one song and want to jump to the next, it takes a few seconds for the player to respond. And the bright, turquoise character that resembles the AirPlay icon at the bottom of the screen widget, you might think you can press to change the sound source, for example, if you want to switch to a pair of other headphones. But this does not seem to have any function at all. At least nothing happens when I press it.
An update will probably come soon that will make the experience better, and we welcome the new Apple Watch app and believe that many Tidal users, who also have an Apple Watch, will use it.
