About the opera
Grounded had its world premiere at the Washington National Opera in 2023. The work narrates the path of a successful fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, who ends up becoming, due to complications derived from an unwanted pregnancy, on a Reaper drone operator in the Nevada desert.
This fast-paced adaptation of George Brant’s award-winning book explores the psychological consequences of war and the role of women in the armed forces and in society in general. The opera is set in the recent past and accurately reflects the contemporary phenomenon of remote warfare. The locations represent the skies over Iraq and both military and civilian sites in the states of Wyoming and Nevada.
