Enjoy a Cool Summer Evening with Outdoor Cinema, Music, and Fireworks in New York City

In New York, summer is very hot and humid. The Big Apple is in any case very lively during these two months when tourists are at least as numerous as locals. To avoid the overflow of air conditioning and take full advantage of the mild evenings of July and August, many places are emigrating outside their premises. Do you want to spend a cool evening? Follow the leader.

Cine under the stars

Outdated, the movie theater? Not if we know how to reinvent it, and New York understood the need to offer something new to its viewers. Many places have developed, in recent years, proposals for cinema under the stars. The best known is certainly Movie Nights at Bryant Park which, as its name suggests, takes place in this green square located in the heart of Midtown and backed by the emblematic New York Public Library. Already the 30th season for this pioneering festival in its time! Of course, it also offers food and drinks around blockbusters of the 7th art, such as “Roman Holiday” (| Vacances Romaines”, 1953, by William Wyler, with Grégory Peck) on Monday July 10 or “Star Trek III” on Monday July 24.

The prize for the most original festival is undoubtedly attributed to… Rooftop movies : again, everything is said in the name. The festival invests roof terraces of the Big Apple to offer a very eclectic selection, alternating between documentaries, auteur films and helping young artists. The event is intended “more than a festival but above all a community, according to the organizers. By offering these films to our audience, we create connections between neighbors, artists, activists, youth and these unique places that we share together”.

Movies under the Stars is the New York City program. He takes care to be present in the five boroughs. To be found this season: “The Secrets of Dumbledore” on Wednesday July 19 at Poor Richard’s Playground, “Back to the Future” on Thursday July 20 at the Staten Island Lawn, or even “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” on Saturday July 22 at Devoe Park in the Bronx. Enjoy it, it’s free!

Le Skyline Drive-In offers a two-in-one: by car or on seats made available, we settle down on the banks of the East River, with Manhattan in the background. If you get bored in front of the films on offer, generally big commercial successes (“Jaws”, “Indiana Jones”, “Mission Impossible”, etc.), you can always daydream in front of the twinkling lights of the city. .

Other proposals for film buffs: Films on the Green, organized in particular by the French Embassy and the Villa Albertine, which celebrates dance with a fairly large French selection (“French Cancan” by Jean Renoir, “Twist à Bamako” by Robert Guédiguian, etc.); Film Works Alfresco, which offers (free) movies in English and Spanish; or the program Summer for the City du Lincoln Center.

outdoor music

The 14th edition of the Summer HD Festival offers from Friday August 25 to Monday September 4, free of charge, 2,500 seats to enjoy the greatest works of classical music at the Met (The Traviata August 26, Falstaff August 29 or So do all August 31).

Shakespeare in the Park, too, offers free performances at the Delacorte Theater in the heart of Central Park. For its 61st edition, the festival has programmed Hamletled by Kenny Leon until Sunday August 6th. The Tempest (by Benjamin Velez, directed by Laurie Woolery with choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher) will follow, from Sunday August 27 to Sunday September 3.

The Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra will play at the Lincoln Center as part of Summer for the city. He will perform a “Tribute to Korea” concert at Damrosch Park on Saturday, July 22.

Sundays will be more devoted to electronic music. Les Hot Honey Sundays are particularly popular. They offer at irregular intervals the hottest Sundays in the Big Apple. Next edition: Sunday July 9 on the Elsewhere rooftop (from 3pm to 10pm). Follow on social media for the latest news. Mister Sunday is organized at Nowadays. It takes place every Sunday from 3pm to 9pm around resident DJs (Justin Carter, Eamon Harkin, etc.). Non-exhaustive list!

Fireworks in the eyes

If you haven’t had enough with those of the 4th of July, the national holiday in the United States, you will always have the possibility of admiring other fireworks by the end of the summer. . Every Friday in the summer, it’s in the dreamlike setting of Coney Island every Friday that a show like no other will take place. Until Friday August 18, above the rides of Luna Park and the Atlantic Ocean, rockets will light up the sky. Start of fireworks scheduled at 9:30pm.
