ENHYPEN’s Nikki Sparks Controversy with Comments on Korean National Holiday

Nicki’s remarks on March 1st were met with a heated debate: “It’s careless” vs. “You may not know.”

The aftermath of Nikki, a Japanese member of the group Enhyphen,’s remarks on March 1st (March 1) is unusual.

Nikki sparked controversy on the 29th of last month when, while communicating with fans on the fan community platform Weverse, she responded “I’m jealous” to a fan’s comment, “I’m taking a break because it’s March 1st.”

On this day, in response to a fan’s post saying “Korea is closed tomorrow,” Nikki asked, “Is tomorrow a red day?” Another fan responded, “Yes, it’s March 1st, so we’re off,” to which another fan commented, “I’m jealous,” and “We don’t have red days or weekends.”

Enhypen is a 7-member multinational boy group that was formed on Mnet’s survival program ‘I-LAND’ and consists of Korean members Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunwoo, Jeongwon, and Nikki.

The problem is that Nikki is a Japanese member. March 1st is a national holiday of the Republic of Korea and commemorates the March 1st Movement, in which the people of the Korean Peninsula protested against Japanese imperial rule and declared Korea’s independence on March 1, 1919, during the Japanese colonial period.

Netizens are debating Nickie’s remarks, saying things like, “I’m angry that people are reacting with ‘envy’ to Japanese people resting on March 1st,” and “Maybe they don’t know because they’re foreigners.” Some say, “There is a need for agencies to provide basic education on Korean culture and the meaning of public holidays. “The problem is that members who are active in Korea are not informed about Korean culture,” he said.

Meanwhile, ENHYPEN recently held a world tour encore performance, ‘ENHYPEN WORLD TOUR ‘FATE PLUS’ IN SEOUL’ (hereinafter referred to as ‘Fate Plus’), at the Case 4 Dome in Olympic Park, Songpa-gu, Seoul. ‘Fate Plus’ will be held in five U.S. cities, including Anaheim, Oakland, Tacoma, Rosemont, and Belmont Park, from April to May.
