In this regard, Dr. Jamal Froiz, a consultant psychiatrist, said that massage not only helps relieve body pain, reduce muscle spasms, and improve blood circulation, but also helps promote mental health.

The mental health consultant added that massage is an effective way to combat stress and anxiety, because massage stimulates the brain to produce more serotonin and dopamine hormones, which help calm nerves, improve mood, and feel happy and comfortable.

According to the National University of Health Sciences NUHS, researchers found in one study that regular massage for children with cancer contributed to reducing psychological symptoms resulting from treatment, such as anxiety and depression.

Research revealed that massage plays a major role in reducing sleep disorders, such as insomnia, provided that you undergo 30-minute massage sessions, twice a week.

Some studies have shown that massage provides great protection against depression, due to the decrease in cortisol levels – known as the stress hormone – when undergoing massage sessions on a regular basis.

Froiz recommended following these guidelines to get the most out of the massage:

Undergoing a massage in the morning.

– Massage the body with one of the natural or aromatic oils, such as olive oil, coconut oil, and lavender oil.

Perform the massage in a dimly lit room away from noise.

Mouth breathing while undergoing massage with eyes closed.

Take a warm shower after the massage.
