On April 28 last year, the gates of the Sinvsi Water Conservancy Project in Dezhou and the Jiuxuan Gate in Tianjin were slowly opened to release water, marking the first time that the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was open to water in a century. The millennium canal ushered in the revival of the century. Nearly a year later, on April 3, when the reporter came to the Sinvsi Water Conservancy Project again, he felt the vitality of the Millennium Canal head-on.

The Sinvsi Water Conservancy Project, known as the “Dujiangyan in the North”, is a large-scale sluice with comprehensive functions such as flood control, drainage, and irrigation. The Grand Canal is divided into three here, the narrower channel is the main channel of the South Canal, and the other two wider channels are the Chahe River and the Jiahe River. Since its completion in 1958, the ship lock has been performing its shipping function until the early 1970s when it ceased sailing.

In order to promote the comprehensive treatment of groundwater overexploitation in North China and the recovery of the ecological environment of rivers and lakes, improve the water resource conditions of the Grand Canal, and restore the vitality of the Grand Canal, in 2022, the Ministry of Water Resources, together with the people’s governments of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and Shandong, launched the Beijing-Hangzhou The entire Grand Canal runs through the water replenishment operation. People’s governments at all levels along the Grand Canal overcame difficulties and went all out to ensure water supply. A total of 840 million cubic meters of water was supplied to the 707-kilometer section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal to the north of the Yellow River. Infiltration and replenishment have improved the ecological environment of rivers and lakes.

From March to May this year, the Ministry of Water Resources launched the water replenishment work for the entire line of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in 2023. On the basis of maintaining the water supply of the entire section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal south of the Yellow River, it will carry out centralized water replenishment to the section north of the Yellow River, and once again realize the entire line of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal According to the situation of water source and water supply, the duration of water supply along the whole line should be extended as much as possible.

The water quality is stable, the ecology is improving, the birds have come to settle down, and the spring of the Millennium Canal is here!
