A dozen screens, the images of forty surveillance cameras displayed at all times, welcome to the centralized control post of Arcueil. In this secure area, CRS and agents monitor the roads and highways of the south-eastern quarter of Île de France 24 hours a day. Increased vigilance for the weekends of great departuresas will be the case from Friday July 28 at noon until Sunday July 30 in the evening.
To ensure the safety of motorists, the CRS of the Ile-de-France motorways and the agents of the Ile de France roads department (DIRIF) work hand in hand under the same roof. The former scrutinize the cameras and respond to calls from the emergency terminals. The latter watch over the infrastructure thanks to hundreds of sensors coupled, sometimes, to artificial intelligence. “Thanks to this proximity, communication passes more easily and we are more reactive”comments Emmanuelle Leroy, the site manager.
300 km of roads
To cope with major departures, staff are reinforced. For example, a third CRS will be on call throughout the weekend, compared to two normally. About ten people are thus the eyes and the ears to detect any anomaly on 300 kilometers of roads and motorways. Including one of the busiest when leaving on vacation: the A6, also known as the “highway of the sun”.

After inspecting the device planned for this first major crossover between Julyists and Aoutiens, the Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, welcomed this monitoring work: “These agents are the guardian angels of our roads, they protect us”. Before addressing a call for vigilance to motorists: “We must protect the personnel on the ground, in orange vests. There have been five fatal accidents this year. We must therefore respect their work.”
For this, one of the good reflexes is already to read the information carefully written on the screens above the highway. Again, a mission carried out by the centralized control post.
