Enhanced Edition gets an update with 60 FPS support and many other improvements

One of the most famous mods for Silent Hill 2 for PC received a massive content update today, February 24th, bringing much-anticipated improvements such as full mouse support, 60 FPS gameplay, and more. A staple of the franchise in many ways, SH2 has long been supported by modders on PC, and while an official Konami remake is in the works, unofficial projects are still going strong.

All in all, Silent Hill is a franchise that has been dormant for a long time. While developer and publisher Konami has announced an impressive all-in-one plan to bring the game back in the coming months and years, this is a relatively new development. In years past, it was the community that had to keep the old favorite SH games alive, and that’s what the Enhanced Edition team did.

One of the greatest horror games of all time has received full mouse control support, a proper 60 FPS rendering mode, and vastly improved support for translation packages. The developers have also confirmed that it will be easier for gamepad users to play the game on a variety of modern controllers, allowing for a much better update than what Konami has officially brought to PC so far.

Naturally, the Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition project runs on the same old game engine as the original, which makes some features extremely difficult to implement. For example, the developers explained via Twitter that the team is going to stick with the 60 FPS cap instead of unlocking the frame rate as it breaks various key components such as the protagonist’s ability to move. The official Konami remake, on the other hand, is one of the games that will run on Unreal Engine 5, and presumably won’t rely on legacy code.

However, the Enhanced Edition project itself is an outstanding achievement, and since the Silent Hill 2 remake will play safely without introducing unnecessary changes to the narrative, it can be argued that for some gamers, the mod is no less the right choice.

The fact that the classic horror game is still as popular as ever was underscored when the Silent Hill 2 Limited Edition vinyl sold out in less than two minutes of being offered. With that in mind, some gamers will definitely want to give Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition a try while waiting for the official remake.

Silent Hill 2 is available on PC, PS2 and Xbox platforms. Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition is available exclusively on PC.
