Enhanced Drone Surveillance to Increase Beach Safety from Shark Attacks

Jahaira Galavis and her family, who flew from Manhattan to take a dip in Rockaway Beach, say they are reassured after hearing that more drones will now fly over the ocean looking for sharks off Long Island and New York City.

“I see that there is more security. Last year I heard a lot that there were sharks on the beaches and listen to me, I got a big, big fear of them, but right now I’m calmer,” said Galavis.

“And with the help of drones, things that are at a distance are identified faster and not in sight of the human being that we are on the shores of the beach,” said Luis Galavis.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced this Friday that dozens of new drones will be deployed to monitor our beaches.

The intensification of surveillance on the coasts follows an increase in cases of shark sightings and attacks on Long Island.

Over the July 4th holiday weekend, five people with shark bites were reported at some of New York’s most popular beaches.

This Thursday a shark was sighted at Robert Moses Beach on Long Island.

To prevent future incidents, the state will hand over the drones to the state and city Parks departments and will also provide funds to train the personnel who will operate the drones.

“This way we are all calm and safe from surveillance. Not only the lifeguards but the security that they are putting up,” said Alberto Guzmán, another bather.

Some of them work with thermal imaging and all have high-quality cameras for surveillance, even at night.

“You never know what animals are there, so knowing that there is security from above is much better,” said Camila Alzate.

While… to minimize the risk of interactions with sharks, the Department of Environmental Conservation recommends staying close to the shore, following the instructions of the lifeguards.

And avoid: swimming at night, in murky waters, swimming, paddling and surfing in a group, avoid areas with seals, or areas with schools of fish.
