Gordon Sumner wrote this song about gay writer friend Quentin Crisp, who moves from England to New York in the 1980s and has to adapt. Crisp can be seen in the video clip of ‘Englishman’. The legendary Branford Marsalis plays saxophone in the song. In 1990 Ben Liebrand makes a remix of the single.
