It was at 1-1 that Mitoma was brought down by Pierre-Emile Højbjerg inside the 16-metre area. Stuart Attwell was clear that it was not a penalty. VAR also did a quick check without choosing to award Brighton a penalty.

Tottenham won the match 2-1 in the end. After the match, Brighton player Lewis Dunk was frustrated by the situation.

– I don’t see what VAR is here to do. You choose to use it to make big decisions, but choose not to make the big decisions anyway. What’s the point of that then? he said accordingly BBC after the match.

It is the third time this season that Brighton have received an apology from the referees’ association for a situation that has unfolded on the pitch.
