New York (AP) – The entire English national football team and the American star player Alex Morgan have sharply criticized the Spanish Football Association President Luis Rubiales. “I am disgusted by Luis Rubiales’ public actions,” the 34-year-old wrote on Friday on platform X, previously known as Twitter.
Morgan felt especially for the Spanish players, who could not be properly celebrated for their World Cup triumph in Australia. “Winning a World Cup should be one of the most beautiful moments in the lives of these players, but instead it is overshadowed by abuse, misogyny and failures by the Spanish FA,” wrote the two-time world champion.
“Abuse is abuse”
In a joint statement, England, who lost 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final, also took a united stand against Rubiales. “Abuse is abuse and we’ve all seen the truth,” they wrote: “The behavior of those who believe they are invincible should not be tolerated and people should not need to be persuaded to take action against any form of harassment.” The team stands by the Spanish side and will support them.
Rubiales kissed the player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth without being asked at the award ceremony for the Spanish world champions in Sydney last Sunday. The official then came under increasing pressure, and many had called for his resignation. The world association FIFA had initiated disciplinary proceedings against the 46-year-old. Rubiales’ resignation was therefore expected at a crisis meeting of the football association on Friday. However, he refused this step. In his heavily criticized speech, Rubiales portrayed himself as a victim of a hunt.
