Newcastle United one step closer to the final English League Cup this season. Go to headquarters Southampton in the semifinal first leg, The Magpies managed to win 1-0.
Playing at St. Mary’s, Wednesday (25/1/2023) early morning WIB, Newcastle’s single winning goal was scored by Joelinton in the 73rd minute. He completed Alexander Isak’s cross from the right with a powerful shot in front of the opponent’s goal.
This match was also colored by Duje Caleta-Car’s red card. The Southampton defender received a second yellow card in the 86th minute for an altercation with Bruno Guimaraes. Previously he received a yellow card for tackling Miguel Almiron in the first half.
This victory gives an advantage for Newcastle, because the second leg will be held at St James’ Park on Wednesday (1/2) at 03.00 WIB. They now need only a draw to qualify for their first domestic final in 24 years.
In 1998-99, Newcastle managed to advance to the FA Cup final, but had to settle for being runners-up after losing 0-2 to Manchester United, who finally won the treble that season.
Newcastle coach, Eddie Howe did not want to get big head first. He is aware that the results obtained in the first leg were only a slight advantage which could change next week.
“It’s nice to win, that’s our target, but we know that 1-0 is difficult, nothing is certain for the final. We will return to St James’ with the support of our fans,” Howe explained to Sky Sports after the game.
