LONDON – English football player Dele Alli spent six weeks in a rehab clinic in the US, where he was treated for addiction to sleeping pills.

The former great talent of English football took them to escape from reality and a traumatic childhood. The 27-year-old midfielder, who still has a contract with Everton for next season, said this today in The Overlap program.

“It went on for a long time without me realizing it. I just wanted to suppress the feelings I had. I didn’t realize I was doing it because of the drinking or something else.” Alli said in an interview with former international Gary Neville.

Alli also revealed that he was sexually molested by his mother’s boyfriend at the age of six and was later sent to Africa to learn discipline. At eight he was dealing drugs, four years later he was adopted by a surrogate family.

Alli made the final decision to enter rehab in April after his failed loan spell at Besiktas was ended by injury. He returned from treatment three weeks ago.

“Mentally, I’m probably the best I’ve ever been,” declared the semifinalist of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, saying that he is ready for next season. The former supporter of Tottenham has 37 matches and three goals in the national team.
