Joey Barton is in a bad mood, Erik ten Hag is denying his players more free time and Roy Hodgson may be hanging loose at Crystal Palace.
Here are today’s English football headlines.
TODAY’S WIND WEATHER: Joey Barton sawed
Joey Barton is in serious trouble after his comments about female TV pundits. The former Man City and Newcastle player believes women are not qualified enough to talk about men’s football.
In a series of posts on X, Barton compared, among other things, female football commentary to if he himself were to share his views on knitting.
“Women should not be empowered to talk about men’s football. Come on now. Let’s be serious,” Barton continues.
The reactions in England have been strong and get big headlines in the newspapers. Sports presenter Laura Woods is one of many to hit back at the former footballer.
“These tweets encourage putting down women who are just trying to do their jobs. Or was that the idea of this?” writes Woods.

TODAY’S TALK: Ten Hag stands his ground
The Mirror – one of the papers that have been ported from Erik ten Hag’s press conferences – hit hard on new information about the atmosphere in the Man United dressing room, along with a couple of other tabloids.
Some players are allegedly dissatisfied with the intensity of training and the difficulty in planning their life outside of football. According to the newspaper, the coach should have denied his players more free time and will not change the actual training schedule either.

The Daily Mail reports that not all players are complaining. Man United’s leadership group consists of captain Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Tom Heaton. Several of these are believed to be fully behind Ten Hag and his methods.
Furthermore, The Independent claims that Casemiro, Varane and Jadon Sancho are on the sale list ahead of January. All for the club to raise capital.

UNCERTAINTY OF THE DAY: Hodgson is hanging loose
Roy Hodgson’s future is uncertain after Crystal Palace’s winless streak (only one win in eight games), says the Daily Mail. The club would prefer if the 76-year-old fulfilled his contract and stayed for the rest of the season, in order to find a long-term replacement more easily. Something that could affect Hodgson’s position is whether Nottingham Forest choose to sack their manager. Namely, Steve Cooper is a name that Palace’s management shows great interest in.
TODAY’S RATING: Modest for the Swedes
After a fine period, Dejan Kulusevski is awarded relatively low marks after Tottenham’s loss at home to West Ham (1–2). “Contributed very little, just like the others in the front trio,” writes Football London.
Alexander Isak is awarded a five (on a ten-point scale) by local newspaper Chronicle Live after Newcastle’s 0–3 loss to Everton. “Missed a good opportunity”, reads the newspaper’s justification.

STATE OF THE DAY: Everton crazy form
Everton have picked up 19 points from their last ten Premier League games. That’s four points more than Manchester City. After the 3-0 victory against Newcastle, Sean Dyche’s gang are on safe ground in the table.
