A young woman has died after falling overboard from a cruise ship while sailing in the English Channel off northwest France.
An alarm was raised on board the Virtuosa at around 2am on Saturday (4am in Greece) to search for a woman in her 20s north of the Le Casquet cliffs in north-west France.
The French search and rescue service said the woman was pulled from the sea by a helicopter crew. Doctors later pronounced her dead.
A passenger on the ship told the BBC that the alarm went off three times to signal that a person had fallen overboard.
The ship’s owning company said it was “deeply saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts are with the family” of the victim. “Out of respect for their privacy, we will not provide further details,” he added.
The Maltese-flagged Virtuosa cruise ship is 331 meters long and 43 meters wide and accommodates up to 6,334 passengers and 1,704 crew. The vessel was built in France in 2020.
It is currently docked at Southampton Docks, where it arrived from Spain.
