English businessman offers over £4bn for Chelsea | english football

Businessman Jim Ratcliffe has made a £4.25 billion offer to buy the Chelsea. The owner of the petrochemical company INEOS – already the majority shareholder of Nice, from France – met with the board of the English club on Thursday and decided to launch the proposal the following day.

“We believe London should have a club that reflects the city’s stature. One that is on the same level as Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich. We intend that the Chelsea be that club,” said the company INEOS, in a statement.

The English billionaire delivered the proposal this Friday to the Raine Group, a commercial bank that has been leading the process of selling the Chelsea. The negotiation depends on the approval of the British government.

The offer included an investment of £1.75bn over 10 years for the development of Stamford Bridge Stadium and other club structures, as well as squad building. Another £2.5 billion would go to a charitable fund supporting victims of the war in Ukraine.

This attempt by Jim Ratcliffe, who until 2018 was considered the richest man in the United Kingdom – a fortune of more than 21 billion pounds -, comes on the same day that the offer of the consortium formed by Steve Pagliuca (co-owner of the Boston Celtics ) was discarded.

However, according to the English press, the expectation is that the consortium formed by businessman Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the LA Lakers, screenwriter Jonathan Goldstein and Swiss Hansjörg Wyss will become the new owner of the club. Furthermore, the new proposal comes weeks after the deadline for offers.
