The Colombian women’s team continued to make history at the Australia and New Zealand 2023 World Cup. Yesterday, the Colombian heroines beat a tough Jamaica 1-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in history.

The only goal of the commitment that got an entire country up early was scored by Catalina Usme, who defined excellently at minute 51. With that victory, now those led by Nelson Abadía will face England, a game scheduled for next Saturday, March 12. August, at 5:30 in the morning.

The dream is still intact

Prior to the start of the World Cup, the players of the Colombian national team agreed on one thing: that they would play this world championship with the clear conviction of becoming champions.

Gone are favorite teams like Brazil, the United States, Germany, etc. Now, the ‘tricolor’ is involved in a select group, but they are not satisfied with that and hope to continue advancing.

“So many things go through my head that I can’t describe what I’m feeling because they are years of work, of fighting, years of some falls, of getting up again and today getting a step to such an important instance in this World Cup. It’s something amazing”, stressed Catalina Usme, one of the leaders of the ‘tricolor’.

“We are very happy but now we have to put our feet on the ground. This cannot be the ceiling of this team, these girls have much more to give and we are going to play equally against England. There were 7 finals, well, we already played 4, we beat them, now we only have 3 left ”, complemented the current player from América de Cali.

For her part, Linda Caicedo, star of the Colombian national team and Real Madrid player, said that they made “history” by qualifying for the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, a “very important step” in their aspiration to become in finalists.

“I am very happy, the team wanted this. Today we make history, but we don’t just want to reach the quarterfinals, it’s a very important step. May Colombians celebrate, the early morning was worth it, we did not fail them”, Caicedo told journalists after the 1-0 victory over Jamaica.

the next target

Finally, Caicedo referred to the next goal for the Colombian team: England, a team that left Nigeria on the road from the penalty spot. In addition, they are the current Eurocup champions.

“It remains to recover and think about England, a difficult rival, a world power. Days come to analyze it well. I know we can hurt him, it’s difficult but not impossible, the team really wants to reach the final and I know we can do it.” Caicedo stated.

England and Colombia have already met in a World Cup. In 2015, in the group stage, the English beat the Colombians 2-1 (the ‘tricolor’ goal was the work of Lady Andrade). For the first time, they will meet in a play-off phase, that is, whoever loses is eliminated from the competition.

The match between the Colombians and the English will be played next Saturday, August 12 at 5:30 in the morning. The winner of this key will face the winner between Australia and France, the latter left Morocco on the way.
