England national coach makes a striking appeal: “Time to unite the country” | European Football Championship 2020

These were not the most turbulent years for England. Just think of Brexit, the controversial approach to the corona pandemic, the vicissitudes in the British royal family and unrest caused by racism.

The latter even trickled down to English football. To kneel or not was the big issue at “The Three Lions” before the start of the European Championships. However, due to the sporting successes, the theme has been pushed into the background.

Gareth Southgate therefore addressed the entire nation after the victory against Ukraine. “We’ve had a lot of division in our country for some time. And I know that nights like this bring everyone together – communities and families.”

“It’s time for the country to unite, period. If the team can be a catalyst for that then that’s a great thing. Sometimes we have to remember what a strong country and island we are. We have great qualities.”

“There were moments at the start of the corona pandemic that were so powerful and people joining forces that we should always strive for that.”

Just like in Russia, Southgate is in the semi-finals with England. The big difference: the semi-finals and final will be played in Wembley. The team will therefore be supported by 60,000 frantic fans. “I don’t really realize it yet,” Southgate puffed. “I saw images from home. It was very nice to see everyone partying with a beer in hand on a Saturday night.”

“It was such a long year for everyone. Everyone should enjoy it,” the coach continued. “It is fantastic for the country that we can finish that semi-final at Wembley. Hopefully it will be another fantastic week. We want to take two more steps at this European Championship.”
