After the inaugural festival against Iran (6-2), which had given the measure of English ambitions in this World Cup in Qatar, the Three lions they were but a shadow of their former self against the United States (0-0) on Friday November 25th. Disappointing, by inspiration, like their captain Harry Kane, whose added-time header (90°+3) missed the shot, Gareth Southgate’s England delivered a soporific copy – to keep it looking good – at Al-Bayt Stadium. A failed game that could have been sanctioned by the unfortunate Christian Pulisic, whose shot crashed into the crossbar (33′).
While the British had the opportunity to be the first nation to qualify for the round of 16, this poor performance against the United States – who they have yet to beat at the World Cup (0-0 in 1950, 0-1 in 2010 and 0 -0 in the 2022) – did not affect their chances. Top of Group B, Harry Maguire’s partners remain best placed to validate their ticket to the rest of the World Cup.
