England and Australia Progress to Women’s World Cup Quarter-finals

Sydney: England and hosts Australia have entered the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup. A 4-2 penalty shoot-out win against Nigeria in the pre-quarters match ended in a goalless draw for the Englishmen to make it to the last eight. Australia also defeated Denmark by two goals without reply.

A tiebreaker was needed after both England and Nigeria failed to convert their opportunities in regulation and extra time. In the 87th minute, star striker Lauren James was red carded and the English team was reduced to ten men. Nigeria managed to mount a strong challenge to the title favourites, after the defending champions US were knocked out by Sweden in the pre-quarters. England will face the winners of the Colombia-Jamaica pre-quarters in Saturday’s quarter-finals.

The Australian win was authentic in the game where captain Sam Kerr, who was out due to injury, took the field for the first time in the tournament. Caitlin Ford in the 29th minute and Hayley Raso in the 70th minute put the ball in the Danish team’s net. Sam Kerr came on as a substitute in the 78th minute. Australia was eliminated in the quarter in the last three World Cups. The hosts will face the winners of the France-Morocco pre-quarters in Saturday’s quarter-finals.

Morocco French challenge

Adelaide: Morocco women, who made a surprise appearance at the World Cup for the first time by getting through the pre-quarters, will face France on Tuesday in search of the quarter-finals. Morocco, the first Arab nation to qualify for the World Cup, will make history if they win. Colombia and Jamaica will meet in another pre-quarter match today.
