The billionaire and patron of the arts, Hansjörg Wyss, has received the Gallatin Award from the Swiss-US Chamber of Commerce for his services to science.

Over the past ten years, Wyss has donated more than half a billion Swiss francs to research projects in two Wyss centers in Zurich and Geneva and the Wyss Academy in Bern.

His donations made the medtech entrepreneur Wyss the most generous private donor to Swiss research. The laudation was given by Research Minister Guy Parmelin, as the University of Zurich announced on Tuesday.

Each of the research institutes named after Wyss works closely with institutions such as the two Federal Institutes of Technology and the Universities of Geneva, Zurich and Bern. According to the information, 25 companies in the fields of robotics to medicine were supported or founded from the centers.

The Chamber of Commerce’s Gallatin Prize honors personalities who have made a contribution to bringing Switzerland and the USA closer together. It commemorates Albert Gallatin, who was born in Geneva in 1761 and was the longest-serving Secretary of the Treasury in the USA between 1801 and 1814. He also founded New York University and the Bank of New York.
