Engineering geologist: Rockfalls in the region are unavoidable – district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald

At the beginning of February, large boulders fell onto the district road between St. Märgen and Glashütte. No one was injured, but the risk of rock falls remains. The season is just beginning.

Clemens Ruch, senior engineering geologist at the Freiburg regional council, talks to Maximilian Sepp about the level of risk and force majeure.

BZ: Mr. Ruch, you were in St. Märgen and examined the crash site. What did you find out?
Ruch: About 30 cubic meters of rock fell onto the road at this point. There was a lot of ice and snow on the embankment at this point. However, one could clearly see that a mass of rock had fallen on a dividing surface that sloped steeply towards the road. We have recognized that the discontinuity continues further into the mountains. One must therefore assume that other rock masses can fall there.
Der Sonntag: BZ: How can you imagine such an investigation?
Ruch: Two of my co-workers abseiled down the rock face and…
