A United Airlines Boeing 777 airliner took off from Denver, Colorado, USA last Saturday (February 20). The original destination was Honolulu, Hawaii. However, the airliner had a mechanical failure during the flight and needed an emergency return. At that time, parts of the right engine of the aircraft disintegrated and peeled off at high altitude, and the parts fell to the ground from high altitude along the return route. Fortunately, the scattered parts did not hit passers-by and only caused property losses.
The PW4077 engine involved was produced by Pratt & Whitney, a major American engine manufacturer. After the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) required all Boeing 777 passenger aircraft using this engine to be inspected.
