Time is running out for an agreement on the extension of the last nuclear power plants. The deal must be completed by 31 December, the deadline that De Croo has set for himself. But some new developments are throwing a spanner in the works.
For example, the Nuclear Facilities Commission (CNV) meets every three years to determine whether there is sufficient budget for the disposal of Belgian nuclear waste and for the demolition work of nuclear power plants in our country.
The independent body recently announced that an additional €3.3 billion will be needed this year to cover costs. This sum comes in addition to the billion euros in nuclear interest that Engie has to pay and the tax on excess profits that the federal government has foreseen.
