Enger Mehl and the PST chief meet the press about the Ukraine war

The case is being updated!

A press release from the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness states that the three will meet the press in connection with “the war in Ukraine and the social security situation”.

You can follow the press conference in the video window at the top of this article or on TV 2 Nyhetskanalen at 2.30 pm.

The threat picture did not change

Minister of Justice and Emergency Management Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp) opened the press conference by showing understanding that people feel uneasy and worried about what is happening.

– The threat picture in Norway has not changed. The war in Ukraine, on the other hand, has changed the security situation in Europe. This means that here in Norway, too, we take preventive measures and follow them closely.

Mehl says that she has asked PST and the police to establish a separate unit that will strengthen the work of analyzing and monitoring threats in civil society here in Norway.

– It is important that we have the best possible overview of threats that may be relevant here in Norway. In this way, we can be extra vigilant in the future. This unit will provide information on the situation that gives the government a basis for assessing the situation on an ongoing basis.

She points out that they do not do this because the threat picture has changed domestically.

Despite the fact that the threat level has not changed in Norway, the head of PST Hans Sverre Sjøvold says that it is still changing rapidly.

Cyberattacks

After Russia invaded Ukraine on Thursday, Enger Mehl said that she did not see any signs of changing the threat picture in Norway, but that the Norwegian authorities would continue to follow the situation closely.

At the same time, the Minister of Justice and Emergency Preparedness pointed out that the national threat assessments as recently as 11 February pointed out that Russia is a well-known threat actor for Norway, and that the general threat of, among other things, cyber attacks was imminent.
