Nordic walking began in Finland in the 1930s, when cross-country skiers wanted to train in the summer.
Nordic walking is at the top of the trends.
It has become a common image in cities and towns, whether there is snow or not. They are those people who walk with special poles and you find them everywhere, in city parks, in fields … Even large companies offer it as coaching to their managers. It is the Nordic Walking, the fastest growing sport in Spain.
As its name suggests, Nordic walking is just that, a way of walking, but not in any way.. To do it, it is necessary to walk with two poles, so it is necessary that we get two specials for the development of this type of walk. In the market we can find different models designed in order to optimize the mechanical movement of our body when walking.
When it comes to walking in this way, what we will do is
involve the upper body almost completely, since the arms, shoulders and back come into play. To this we must add the lower body, especially to affect the hip, which will increase the effectiveness of the movement. It is precisely this action of the hip, which will help us to increase the speed when moving, even more than in normal conditions. In addition, it will help us to fatigue much less.
Once we know the technique, it is very important to know what benefits it is going to offer us for our body:
First of all, it is an activity that activates almost all the muscles of the body. Therefore, it is a good way to work them, strengthen them and keep them toned.. If we walk in natural spaces, the intensity will vary depending on the conditions of the ground, the inclination … For this reason it is a good way to keep us in top shape and muscular tone.
By involving both parts of the body, we will improve the coordination of the lower body with the upper body, since we must perform appropriate movements for the activity to be carried out successfully.
It is a good aerobic exercise that will help us activate blood circulation, while improving and strengthening the immune system. This will help us increase the feeling of well-being.
Being an aerobic exercise that involves so many parts of the body, it will be a good way to burn calories and thereby reduce body fat and thus improve our physical fitness and health in general.
The work and the technique that it requires will make us improve our body posture, in addition to strengthening the back and thus avoiding pain in this area of the body.
Nordic walking in the cancer process
In cancer survivors, studies carried out in breast cancer conclude in finding improvements in the muscular activity of the trunk and in posture, in those cancer patients who perform Nordic walking.
Likewise, another study found an increase in the range of motion of the shoulder affected by the treatment (external rotation, abduction and frontal flexion) after 10 supervised sessions of Nordic walking. Scientific literature has also confirmed that a 12-week Nordic walking intervention in women with atralgia associated with treatment with aromatase inhibitors succeeded in increasing their levels of physical activity and reducing joint pain without causing or exacerbating lymphedema.
Likewise, MN interventions resulted in improvements in anthropometric circumferential measurements of the arm in women with lymphedema secondary to breast cancer.
There are many benefits of practicing Nordic walking regularly and knowing the technique well to obtain the best results from practicing this sport.
Nordic walking is a valid alternative to improve functional capacities, quality of gait and quality of life in Parkinson’s patients.
In recent years, different studies have indicated physical exercise as the main way to improve or preserve the ability to walk in these patients, and with it their quality of life, having a very important role in rehabilitation.
The use of specific poles can give the patient great security, since it allows the entire upper body to work more intensely: hands, arms, shoulders and back and to extend the extension of the arms and stride, maintaining a firm balance . Posture is improved thanks to the support of the cane.
The practice of Nordic Walking, with the participation of the upper body, leads to a significant improvement in walking compared to normal walking.

Caja Rural Burgos Foundation and CajaViva. These days are made up of two introductory Nordic walking classes with our instructor, Gerard Gibaja, and two consecutive Marching Saturdays. These marches, taking advantage of the wonderful landscapes and landscapes that the city of Burgos offers, will give free rein to the ability of the Nordic walking participants to learn and have fun.
The course will begin on July 11, with a welcome session and first steps to get the technique.
On July 11 and 18, the technique sessions will be completed (improvement) considering the participants ready for an outing.
Technical March 24 and 31 July
On July 24, a first outing will be scheduled taking advantage of the beautiful urban settings that our city offers.
The last Saturday, July 31, the days will be completed with another scheduled departure.
For all these activities, the participants do not have to carry the technical tools (poles) to be able to carry out the activity, but they will be provided on site. What is advisable to wear is comfortable clothing and shoes.
