Energy-Saving Paint: How it Can Reduce Electricity Bills and Save up to 7.4% of Energy Consumption

If paint is used correctly, it can significantly reduce electricity bills. The paint can reflect up to 80 percent of mid-infrared sunlight, which is 10 times more than other paints.

Mid-infrared radiation is usually absorbed as heat on building surfaces. Infrared radiation is invisible to the human eye, but well known to the senses as heat or thermal radiation. By painting the outside of the building with a paint developed by scientists, it helps keep heat out.

As such, the paint’s developers say it provides a “year-round energy-saving solution” that can be used in a variety of climates.

Researchers estimate that painting an entire building could save 7.4 percent of the energy needed to heat, ventilate, or cool an average apartment building.

The color developed by Stanford University scientists is not white or silver. It includes white, blue, red, yellow, green, orange, purple and dark gray.
