Energy-saving Measures to Address Rising Electricity Prices

In a way, it seems that the wariness of high electricity and gas prices has already subsided. It could appear that energies have become cheaper again to a reasonable level. But that is far from the case. Prices will probably never return to their original level, and many households are still fixed at very high prices without really knowing it.

Save electricity

It is therefore absolutely necessary to continue with energy-saving measures, even at the level of individual households. “Next year, electricity is set to become more expensive again, by some 20% for most households,” says electrician František Sláma. “I know from my own experience that thousands of crowns can be saved annually by using and setting up appliances correctly. Maybe even more today.

A few appliances consume the most electricity in your home, namely those with an input exceeding two thousand watts. Intuitively, you might point to the refrigerator or the washing machine. “In reality, however, a kettle, blender or hair dryer consumes much more per unit, i.e. very small electrical devices,” explains the electrician. “There it distorts the fact that we usually only turn them on for a short time, but if they run longer, it is clearly reflected in the accounts.

On the contrary, it probably won’t be too surprising that the induction hob is a really massive consumer of electricity. There, the power consumption can reach up to 9000 watts. Nevertheless, this appliance is usually ranked among the energy-saving ones. Again, this is because it has to achieve high performance only for a short time, unlike, for example, classic glass ceramics, which do not eat as much immediately, but have to heat up for a longer time. “Nevertheless, in many cases it is not advisable to activate induction. Money disappears really fast there. For example, a microwave oven is much more suitable for heating food,” says Mr. František Sláma.

Literally liquidating in terms of electricity consumption prices is, however, a different matter from his point of view. It has been talked about a lot in the past, but even so, there are only a minimum of people who would somehow operate with the fact that the vast majority of appliances draw electricity even when you are not using them at all, in standby mode.

Hard shutdown does no harm

It’s a tax to be able to start using them right away. “But if people only had this item of standby modes calculated on the invoice, I am convinced that they would quickly arrange it differently. But of course that will never happen,” the electrician alludes to the fact that energy companies are comfortable with their customers consuming a permanent small amount of electricity.

With today’s electricity prices and the number of appliances, permanently running on standby can really cost thousands of crowns a year. According to the expert, people should not be afraid to turn off appliances hard, with the exception of the refrigerator or freezer, of course. There is a widespread rumor that this switching off is harmful to appliances, but this is said to be nonsense. “A suitable solution is, for example, extension cords, where you plug in several appliances and then deactivate them at once,” explains the expert.
