The Polesud ice rink in Grenoble underwent major energy renovation work starting in 2019. Aging equipment was replaced and other improvements were made, allowing a reduction in energy consumption of around by 35%.
Brand new equipment to lower energy bills. The new de-icing machine at the Polesud ice rink in Grenoble removes snow with precision so that the thickness of the ice is as thin as possible. The snow is then stored and must be evacuated by transforming it into water.
So many manipulations that require energy. “We have a hot water tank which allows us to supply the snow pit with lukewarm water so that, when we throw the snow, it melts as quickly as possible. We use the hot water from the compressors to melt it in the most efficient way possible.summarizes the director of the ice rink, Benjamin Agnel.
In 2019, Grenoble-Alpes Métropole launched an infrastructure renovation project aimed at reducing energy consumption, but also optimizing consumption points. LED lighting, motion detectors, new ventilation system… Everything is controlled using software.
“This also allows us to see operating anomalies more precisely without waiting for the electricity bill to arrive to target a problem with the equipment”adds the technical manager of the ice rink, Martial Rodriguez.

The Metropolis has invested 6 million euros in the renovation of the Polesud ice rink to reduce environmental impacts. And she intends to continue her efforts.
“Our desire is to try to ensure that all the energy consumed, to light the stadium or to produce cold, is instead produced by renewable energy, therefore photovoltaics”declares Thierry Semanaz, Metropole vice-president in charge of sports.
The results are rather satisfactory with a reduction in energy consumption of around 35%. Hockey clubs, schools, figure skaters: each year, the ice rink welcomes nearly 150,000 users out of 400,000 visitors.
