Energy prices continue to fall slightly even in December: “Those who enter into a contract this month will pay an average of 5,085 euros” | Energy prices

After the record months of August and September, this autumn we are seeing a drop in energy prices. Like last month, wholesale electricity and natural gas prices fell further in December. According to the Flemish energy regulator VREG, anyone who signs a contract this month will pay an average of 5,085 euros.

While energy prices have been on a downward trend since October, they remain on the high side. Last year’s price level is therefore not yet in sight. In November, the average annual price of gas was 3,287.15 euros and that of electricity was 2,065.48 euros. Together this was an annual energy price of 5,352.63 euros.

However, that’s the point average prices, with which the VREG tries to estimate the annual bill for a contract concluded in December. According to the Flemish energy regulator, those who conclude a contract this month will pay an average of 3,079.62 euros a year for gas and 2,011.38 euros for electricity.

Downward trend

Energy prices have therefore shown a slight decline since September. That month, the average annual bill was still around 9,200 euros. Despite the decline, energy prices are still at an all-time high. By way of comparison: in December last year the average price of energy was still 3,760 euros a year.

Social rate

Nothing will change for those who fall within the social rate. So you pay like in October and November. In fact, for the last quarter of this year, the social rate was set at 578.08 euros for gas and 858.66 euros for electricity.

The fall in average consumer prices is therefore not reflected in the social rate. This is fixed per quarter. Due to the historically high prices in September, the social security rate was then increased for the last quarter of the year. So it’s still at the top end.
