This year, especially in its second half, there was some relief after what we experienced last year. I’m sure you still remember how there was speculation about whether there would be anything to heat the house at all, and if there was, whether we would even be able to afford to pay for gas and electricity, as some bills climbed up to hundreds of thousands of crowns.
There was pressure
In the end, the price ceiling had to come, which, paradoxically, only started when the biggest wave of energy price increases subsided, and a gradual decline began. Today, energy ceilings are completely unnecessary, as the prices of electricity and gas are far below them.
Unfortunately, energy suppliers are again abusing the situation. People have slacked off in watching how energy prices develop on the stock exchanges, where they fall quite steeply. However, suppliers react to this only very slowly and cautiously. On the contrary, it seems that they want to take advantage of the situation and hold on to high prices for as long as possible, which at the same time no longer correspond to how much they themselves buy energy on the market.
One thing is that energy suppliers are very slow to give you discounts on open-ended contracts, which can usually be canceled with three months’ notice. However, this forces customers to enter into a fixed-term contract, which can also be terminated, but only at the cost of considerable penalties.
But here is the crux of the problem. With these fixed-term contracts, the prices of gas and electricity are still high, with clients considering the fact that they will be subscribing for the next three years at these high prices.

Don’t be too hasty
“I made a terrible mistake in the spring. At that time, it was still uncertain how the prices would develop, so I accepted the offer of the supplier, who gave me a three-year fixation with prices slightly lower than the state ceiling,” recounts Mrs. Lenka. “But even now the prices are still tens of percent lower and I will be paying a lot of money for three years.“

And although prices have indeed fallen a bit since the spring, the fixation may still not be worth it. These are still prices that are many times higher than what we were used to paying in 2021. And despite the fact that electricity and gas prices are unlikely to return to those levels, there is a pretty good assumption that they will continue to gradually decline . Fixation under current conditions, especially with not very fair suppliers, can therefore be a really big mistake.
