The energy transition in Mali is on its way. In addition to the production of electricity via carbon, solar and hydropower, another means of production is emerging in the country: that by gas. It is the work of Genesis Energy, a London electricity production company which, in collaboration with the Malian Cashew Corporation plant, has just set up in Mali.
This Thursday, March 9, 2023 took place in Diatoula (Bamako), the launch of the very first gas power plant established by the company.
With a production capacity of 80 MW, the plant will provide the plant with energy that is cheaper than that generated by diesel generators; more reliable than photovoltaic panels because they are more constant, and also much less polluting.
“It is energy efficient, cost-effective, burns gas that does not pollute the environment like diesel and solves our energy needs,” chants Firoze Kapadia, the representative of Malian Cashew Corporation. According to the latter, his company, which is evolving in the transformation, needs a growing energy source.
“Genesis Energy’s microturbines are highly efficient unlike diesel engines and can also use the heat generated to produce more electricity. Thanks to this technology, we are able to reduce our energy bill and, more importantly, we have the necessary comfort that our factory will not suffer any breakdown during the high season”, he rejoices.
For Henry Dubier, Regional Director of Genesis Energy, the project is proof of his company’s commitment “to decarbonize Africa in general and Mali in particular”. Electricity being at the heart of development, according to him, countries must be able to produce it efficiently.
It should be noted that in Mali, the government has been engaged in an energetic transition process for some time with a view to supporting the Energy of Mali.
