Energy-efficient renovation of apartments should be easier | living

On Tuesday, the Parliamentary Climate Committee approved the proposal of initiator Kris Verduyckt (Vooruit) that aims to make it easier to implement energy-efficient interventions in an apartment building. Only Vlaams Belang abstained. The intention is now for the federal government to start working on the construction and real estate sector. Several barriers, both legal and financial, need to be removed. Member of Parliament Verduyckt emphasizes the urgency of measures: “If we want to reduce energy consumption for apartment residents, an important challenge lies in energy-efficient renovation of those buildings. This should be possible faster: it is all hands on deck.”

No less than a quarter of all Belgians live in an apartment, and that share is rising. In cities this even rises to 70% of all inhabitants. But barely 4% of all Flemish apartments today carry the most economical “A energy label”. In Brussels it is 8% and in Wallonia 3%. By 2050, all apartments should have that highest quality stamp. However, renovations are currently a difficult task due to the complex system of the association of co-ownership (VME). For example, solar panels can only be installed if 2/3 of all residents agree: the signatories of the proposal want this to be possible with a simple majority.
