Energy company announces no tariff increase for 2024 – weekly paper

Asunción: The head of the energy group ANDE, Félix Sosa, shared his visions for 2024, clarifying that although an increase in tariffs is not expected, the final decision lies with the board of directors of the state-owned company.

Sosa addressed various topics, from the complexity of setting the annual budget to the modernization of the state-owned company and its commitment to the country’s economic development.

Sosa said the ANDE faces challenges in setting a budget for next year as certain factors and scenarios need to be determined. He expressed confidence that bilateral relations between Paraguay and Brazil will lead to favorable negotiations on the Itaipú tariff, as well as in the electricity contracts and the operating agreement.

Sosa said ANDE’s main objective is to continue to provide quality services, contribute to economic and social development and encourage the creation of more companies in the country to provide more employment opportunities, in line with the government’s goal of creating 500,000 jobs.

Regarding the tariff, Sosa emphasized that the final decision rests with the supervisory board of the state-owned company, which then forwards the information to the executive branch. He emphasized that various resource generation scenarios are being considered and the budget does not always reflect the company’s actual income. Sosa specified that the current income is not reached to cover all the necessary investments and therefore multilateral loans are resorted to due to the initial growth in consumption, which has reached 6.5%.

The engineer reveals that the current electricity tariff is more political than technical and is below what it should be, supported by subsidies, loans and grants from the Itaipú binational hydroelectric plant. In addition, he reported that ANDE is working on issuing its own debt to achieve financial independence and is developing a new energy policy and the digitalization of all transmission lines as part of a modernization plan planned for the next three years.
