The operation concerns 350,000 of the 650,000 prepayment meters installed by the company in Cameroon and aims to bring them into line with the world standard in this area.
Some Eneo Cameroon customers, particularly those using prepaid meters, could be seized by the company. This announces a campaign to update its meters throughout the national territory. This operation, explains the company, constitutes a requirement for compliance with international standards. Eneo is thus aligning itself with the global campaign to update prepayment meters from the STS edition 1 standard to the STS edition 2 standard.
The operation recommended by the publisher STS Association also concerns around 2 million users in Uganda and 3.5 million in Kenya. In Cameroon, 350,000 of the 650,000 prepayment meters installed by Eneo will undergo this operation. “ Eneo Cameroon will contact the customers concerned individually by SMS or WhatsApp to provide them with the codes/tokens to insert to update their meters. This involves responding to a security and service continuity issue. Meter reliability and pricing will in no way be affected by this update. », informs the company. The dealer must complete this update before November 24, 2024. From this date, all prepayment meters that are still at the lower standard will no longer be able to accept recharge codes, and therefore will no longer be able to provide electricity.
It must be said that since their arrival in 2019, prepayment meters have been in high demand among Cameroonian consumers. The number of subscribers continues to grow. “ More than 90% of new customers in the first half of 2023 have accepted the prepaid solution. This brought the share of prepaid in the number of meters placed in households to 32%, compared to 28% at the end of 2022. », informed the company producing and distributing electrical energy in Cameroon in its quarterly newsletter.
If prepaid has the advantage of giving the customer the possibility of controlling their consumption and reducing cases of billing disputes, this mode of consumption remains subject to the challenge of fraud. 62% of cases of fraud in Douala during the first half of 2023 were detected on this type of meters compared to 38% on conventional meters, the company indicated in its recent quarterly bulletin. “ Ungentlemanly customers have used multiple techniques to prevent these meters from recording consumption.», Added Eneo Cameroon.
